A Nevada man has been charged in connection with a scheme to fraudulently claim lottery winnings using altered and counterfeit tickets. According to the Nevada Gaming Control Board and the Nevada Attorney General’s Office, the defendant attempted to redeem multiple high-value lottery tickets that had been manipulated to appear as winners.
Authorities allege the individual collected discarded, non-winning tickets from retail locations and used chemical treatments and digital editing techniques to alter barcodes and printed numbers. These tickets were then presented at authorized claim centers in an effort to secure payouts. In some instances, the defendant also attempted to exploit vulnerabilities in the ticket validation process by targeting busy retail periods when clerks were less likely to perform thorough checks.
The scheme was uncovered after lottery officials flagged irregularities in the validation system, including mismatched serial numbers and redemption attempts linked to previously scanned losing tickets. Surveillance footage and transaction records helped investigators identify repeated claim attempts tied to the same individual across multiple locations.
“This type of fraud undermines the integrity of lottery systems that are designed to be fair and transparent,” said a Gaming Control Board representative. “Advanced validation technology and retailer vigilance are critical to stopping these attempts before funds are lost.”
Officials have since reinforced ticket verification protocols and increased training for retailers on identifying suspicious redemption activity. The defendant faces charges including fraud, forgery, and attempted theft.
