Angela Marie Farr, a 36-year-old resident of Leonardtown, Md., and former member of the U.S. Navy, defrauded the Veterans Administration and Social Security Administration of more than $1 million in disability benefits. (It sounds like her motto was definitely NOT “Non Patriae Sed Sib,” or not for self, but for country. Fraudsters are known for their selfishness.)
Farr previously filed for disability compensation because she claimed she had post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) linked to being sexually assaulted while on duty a year before her administrative discharge from the Navy. In 2006, she also claimed serious injury resulting from a car crash involving a drunk driver while on duty. (Lady Luck is definitely not this woman’s friend.)
Farr filed false documents with the Department of Veterans Affairs to build her claims for disability compensation. She also reported that her father and then-husband were homebound, when neither were. (Fraudster activity involving her then-husband has her soon-to-be prison-bound.)
Farr pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit theft of government property and two counts of theft of government property. She faces up to five years in federal prison for the count of conspiracy and up to 10 years for each count of theft of government property. Her sentencing is scheduled for August 4. (It looks like this fraudster will go from wearing her navy dress blues to an orange prison jump suit very soon.)
Today’s Fraud of the Day comes from the Associate Press (AP) article, “Maryland woman pleads guilty to trying to get benefits,” dated March 12, 2022.
GREENBELT, Md. (AP) — A Maryland woman who formerly served in the U.S. Navy has pleaded guilty to conspiring to submit false claims to the Veterans Administration and the Social Security Administration to obtain more than $1 million in disability benefits, a federal prosecutor said.
Angela Marie Farr, 36, of Leonardtown pleaded guilty on Friday to conspiracy to commit theft of government property and two counts of theft of government property, said U.S. Attorney Erek Barron in a news release.
