In September 2010, Robert Anthony Monsen filed for Social Security disability and Medicare benefits, claiming severe back injuries that rendered him unable to work. Until November 2023, Monsen continued to receive Title II Disability benefits at a rate of $1,981.00 per month for himself, in addition to other family benefits…all the while he continued to work several jobs, including one in bail bonds. The very job that provides bonds for people charged with crimes and who do not have the money necessary to post the entire bail with the court.
For over 13 years while receiving disability benefits, Monsen continually claimed that he was too disabled to work. However, Monsen worked several jobs during this time besides in bail bonds, including active work in security and the restaurant business. During this time, Monsen concealed his income and functionality from Social Security Administration (SSA), in part by routing his paychecks through an LLC in another individual’s name.
Along with working, Monsen also took several vacations in the U.S. and overseas, snorkeling, enjoying the beach, and assisting fighters inside the ring at a mixed martial arts event. All while failing to communicate to the SSA of any improvements to his condition, despite continuous reminders from the SSA that he was obligated to do so if his health improved or if he was able to begin work.
On December 21, 2024, Monsen was sentenced to eighteen months in prison, three years’ supervised release, and ordered by the court to pay over $561,000 in restitution to the SSA and Medicare.
The case was investigated by the SSA, Cooperative Disability Investigations Unit.
