All Laws Apply

On February 15, 2023, Amos Mundeni received a forty two month U.S. prison sentence even though he claims federal laws in the U.S. do not apply to him. What fraudster doesn’t say that? Mundeni claims to be a “Moorish sovereign citizen” who doesn’t recognize the authority of the US government. The Moorish sovereign citizen movement is a collection of independent organizations and lone individuals who believe that individual citizens hold sovereignty over, and are independent of, the authority of federal and state governments. Moorish sovereign citizens are considered an extremist group. Newsflash! Regardless of beliefs or affiliations, everyone must obey the law!

It didn’t matter what excuse Mundeni gave for his fraud scheme. Justice was served for someone who only had intentions to steal from the United States taxpayer. Mundendi, and four cohorts, submitted fraudulent applications to the Small Business Administration Paycheck Protection Program. The team attempted to fraudulently obtain over $30 million in Government-guaranteed loans using fraudulent applications of various companies located in the Southern District of New York. The applications contained lies designed to maximize proceeds to the fraud scheme which resulted in over $15 million in stolen loan funds. All the funds were distributed to personal accounts in the United States and overseas.

One business that Mundeni did not use in this scheme was his own. According to authorities, Mundeni’s only form of business was selling bogus Moorish Identification Cards.

Outstanding work by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Damian Williams, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, announced that AMOS MUNDENDI, a/k/a “Mos,” a/k/a “El Ashile Mundi,” was sentenced today in Manhattan federal court by United States District Judge Paul A. Engelmayer to 42 months in prison for his participation in a scheme to fraudulently obtain over $30 million in Government-guaranteed loans designed to provide relief to small businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic.  MUNDENDI is the last of five defendants to be sentenced in the case.  MACKENZY TOUSSAINT, APOCALYPSE BELLA, a/k/a “Dias Yumba,” BRANDON JACKSON, and ALVIN MAXWELL were previously sentenced by Judge Engelmayer.

U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said: “Amid the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic that wreaked havoc on economies worldwide, Amos Mundendi and his co-defendants illegally plundered funds meant to financially support struggling businesses.  All defendants in this case will now serve substantial prison time for stealing.
